Cooper Family File

The dated items in this collection span the period of July 7, 1865 to November 4, 1887. The ten documents include:

  • one junior officer’s identity card for Lt. Caleb H. Cooper (b. abt. 1839; d. December 14, 1867), 9th Indiana Cavalry Regiment, Co. E
  • one certificate of appointment by Commissioner Joshua H. Mellett (b. April 9, 1824; d. October 1, 1893) for Cooper to become deputy commissioner for enlistment in Harrison Township, Henry County, for enrollment of militia;
  • an appointment certificate granted under the authority of Governor Oliver P. Morton (b. August 4, 1823; d. November 1, 1877) naming Cooper a notary public;
  • a letter from Caleb’s brother Imla W. Cooper (b. abt. 1844; d. December 21, 1928), 147th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Co. D, to his sister Jane;
  • three official documents involving the sale of an army horse to Caleb H. Cooper; and
  • three letters to and from Israel A. Cooper (b. July 4, 1836; d. May 20, 1914), brother to Caleb and Imla, on the issue of pension benefits to Caleb’s survivors.

Sometimes difficult to decipher, the letters are presented along with transcripts, allowing for easy page by page viewing.
