U.S. Civil War Resources for East Central Indiana Grant Project Personnel
The following University Library personnel will devote the percentage
of time (40-hour work weeks) given in parentheses to their respective
areas of the project:
Arthur W. Hafner, Ph.D., Dean, University Libraries, will serve as Co-Principal Investigator. He has Masters degrees in the areas of library science, mathematics, and business administration, a Ph.D., in library science, and over 25 years of library administration experience. (5%)
John B. Straw, Director for Archives and Special Collections Research Center, is the University Libraries’ Digital Media Repository Coordinator. He will serve as Co-Principal Investigator/Project Manager for the digitization project. He will perform overall administrative tasks, prepare reports, communicate and work with partners, and disseminate and publicize project results. Mr. Straw has a Masters in Library Science from Indiana University and has been an archivist for over 23 years. He has extensive experience creating digital collections and managing projects in positions at Ball State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign, and Virginia Tech. (15%)
James Bradley, Head of Metadata and Digital Initiatives, will oversee, coordinate, monitor digitization of grant collections; recommend for hire/train/supervise/direct section personnel; ensure compliance with LSTA digitization and metadata standards; recommend equipment; develop/document procedures; create administrative, structural and preservation metadata; collaborate with catalogers providing the descriptive metadata; create templates, load collections into CONTENTdm, etc.; and maintain statistics. Mr. Bradley holds a Masters of Information Science (MIS) degree from Indiana University and has 12 years’ experience with digitization and 4 years’ experience working with metadata. (20%)
Cinda Tamsett, Technical Cataloging Assistant/Monographs will create/revise descriptive metadata; proofread transcriptions done by others; transcribe documents if needed. She has 18 years’ experience cataloging books, microforms and videos for University Libraries and has also assisted with the development of various databases, demonstrating excellence in data entry and proofreading. (15%)
Brenda Wilkinson, Technical Cataloging Assistant/Authority Control will proofread transcriptions done by others; review/revise descriptive metadata; and perform authority control functions. She has been employed at University Libraries’ Cataloging and Metadata Services Unit for 16 years and her responsibilities include reviewing and revising authority records for accuracy as well as proofreading information in various Access databases. (15%)
Martha Haney, Technical Cataloging Assistant/Monographs, will create/revise descriptive metadata; and transcribe materials as needed. She has 8 years’ experience in cataloging monographs in various formats for the University Libraries’ collections. She has also worked closely with Archives and Special Collections to catalog rare books and archival materials. (15%)
Cathy Hammett, Technical Cataloging Assistant/Bibliographic Control, will create/revise descriptive metadata; proofread transcriptions done by others; provide transcriptions if needed. She has 20 years’ experience as a cataloger of architecture slides for University Libraries. Over the years she has created, reviewed, or revised records for the Libraries’ online catalog and a number of specialized databases. (15%)
Vanda Carnes, Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services, will incorporate project activities/personnel into unit space, workflow and priorities; and coordinate/facilitate activities of Technical Cataloging Assistants providing descriptive metadata. She has a Masters in Library Science (MLS) degree from Ball State University and 20 years’ experience in library technical services, including coordination of digitization projects. (5%)
Sharon Roberts, Assistant Dean for Technical Services, University Libraries, will provide administrative support for project activities; facilitate onsite visits; compile reports; and ensure compliance with timetable. She has a Masters of Library Science (MLS) degree from Indiana University and a Master of Arts (MA) degree from the University of Cincinnati. She has over 26 library technical services’ experience, most of which involved managerial or administrative roles. (5%)
Bradley Faust, Assistant Dean for Library Information Technology Services, will coordinate administrative issues associated with managing non-Ball State collections on the BSU CONTENTdm server, and coordinate storage space and system issues. He has a Masters in Library Science from Indiana University, 4 years experience as Systems Coordinator at the Ball State University Libraries, and 13 years experience managing the Library Information Technology Services unit in the University Libraries.(5%)
Budi Wibowo, Head of Digital Libraries and Web Services, will define grant collections in CONTENTdm, develop custom interface web pages for grant collections, and assist with system access control issues related to the project. He will also provide technical support for the equipment that is part of the mobile scanning unit. Mr.Wibowo is responsible for system administration for the Ball State University implementation of CONTENTdm. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Ball State and has experience with record management systems.(10%)
Daniel Hartwig, Assistant Archivist, will develop evaluation surveys (Web-based and paper) and assist in designing the public interface for the collections and the Web page for the project. He has a Masters in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin. His experience includes designing Web pages for the Ball State University Archives. (5%)
Temporary part-time staff and students will be hired in addition to the current staff. A temporary part-time (20 hours per week) classified staff position will be needed to digitize collections, direct student assistants in scanning, and perform file conversions. Two temporary student assistants (20 hours per week each) will be needed to assist with scanning, transcription, and file conversions. Another temporary part-time (20 hours per week) classified staff position is needed to transcribe handwritten documents and proof text.
Ball State University Teleplex personnel will videotape the readings of the letters and diaries and will digitize the videos. Dan R. Lutz, Associate Director for University Teleplex, and Patrick Alan Gordon, Production Manager, will have administrative responsibilities for the Teleplex activities, coordinated with project manager John Straw.
Teachers at the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities at Ball State will use the digital repository in classes and help to evaluate the project. Dr. David C. Williams, Director of Academic Affairs, will have administrative responsibilities for Indiana Academy activities. The Ball State University Department of History will be adding a Civil War historian to its faculty next year and that person, and other History faculty, will be involved in using and evaluating the resources as well.
