Artist Statement	"As long as I can remember I've always been drawn to surfaces. I remember the distinct cool, rough feeling of concrete underfoot in my Dad's workshop and the grit and the texture of a cement sidewalk around a pool deck. Any surface, whether it be the grain of lumbered wood or the yellow and brittle pages of an old book can be viewed as beautiful when valuing them for their individual surface qualities. This series of work is a study of the juxtaposition of diverse materials and the human form, where the figure serves as the conceptual canvas against which other tangible materials are contrasted. This work is rooted in pairing the figure with organic matter and the potential expression the human body possesses. My interests lie in making things that employ pattern, intense use of color, gestural marks and layered conceptual information. This collection differs from earlier work by its lack of adornment, design or pattern to the figure. Without the use of color the figure stands bare and unabashed. Many of these pieces were initially conceived well before I began the act of creating them. As an artist, I tend to mull over things until the desire to create what I have envisioned suddenly takes precedent over life's other obstacles, previously too daunting to ignore. Time has brought a realization that growth happens within the works, even before they are tangible. Only now though, given time to mature and develop, has the real meaning and depth brought continuity to the work. Most of the pieces are narratives, not meant to be overt statements or story lines, but mere moments or captions of a feeling. When I work with a model I am continually telling them to do what feels natural and I'll pick the pose from their expression. The models inhibition and comfort level impacts my pieces' outcome. The success of these pieces is due, in part, to being able to capture this from the models during the casting process. This body of work is about surfaces. The beauty found in the texture of the skin, the elegance of muscle on an elongated neck, outstretched arm, or clavicle bone. The image of femininity suggested by the small of a female back or the strength conveyed by the sight of a man's shoulders, muscles apparent and defined without effort. It is also about truth to materials and a connection between a sensitive form and equally sensitive medium. Clay, as a material, has the ability to capture the smallest of detail. It is not surprising at all that this has become the vehicle for my self-expression. A Ball State professor made a comment to me I'll never forget. He told me that I'd been "captured by the seductiveness of clay." I have rediscovered this truth within my process. This material has an alluring and truthful quality in it's ability to mirror the surfaces that I admire. Artists I've been inspired by include Mary Frank, Nan Smith, and Louise Bourgois for their figurative subject matter and narrative qualities created by simple scenes and expressive poses. As well as, Auguste Rodin for his figurative grounding and for development of the fragmented figure as a sculpture. I'd like to publicly thank each of the individuals who were key in the development of this show, without whom it would not have been possible. To my faculty mentors Ted Neal and Bill Zack for their continual guidance and direction. In addition to the numerous professors who offered impacting lessons throughout the years. Finally, I'd like to formally thank Emeritus Linda Arndt, who offered abundant encouragement and support to me as a young artist at Ball State University.
