Artist Statement	The female form is a constant theme in art history, encompassing all mediums. I use this in a manner that brings the classics to the industrial age, juxtaposing natural beauty and what is to me, industrial ugliness. Texture is my main focus of these pieces: layering metal that is changed from a pristine, flat cut of steel to a rough, beaten surface that lends to the character of the battered negative. I also used the bolts. nails and plywood base to further push the idea of industrial extremes in texture. Natural beauty is often from the figure, organic life and things that grow from the ground. With that in mind, I wanted to confront the height of natural beauty, the female form, with the opposite of what is first thought as beautiful, rough, cold and distant, manmade materials. Another point my work addresses is about women and the situations they deal with on a daily basis. It personifies the feelings many have while keeping quiet in the shadows "for the better good" which is something I've seen many do. It deals with where the lines are drawn in the female struggle: focusing on the idea of the roles of woman as caretakers. the responsibilities of relationships. and maintaining an independent self, all without being spread too thin. Some influences in my work come from studying Joel Peter Witkin, The Starn Twins and the lesser known artist, Emil Schildt. Their work focuses strongly on mark-making on photographic negatives along with strong poses of the figure, along with alternative process and presentation. Film is somewhat of a dying art form which I fully intend to utilize till it is no longer possible. however I also feel it helps me to convey my ideas more fully by using my hands to create my art. I would like to thank Jacinda Russell for all her help and inspiration along the way, along with all my friends and family for always being there for me and keeping me sane this semester.
