Artist Statement	"I have been working with documentary photography for a year now. I started with my friend Amanda, composing a study of her family life. I focused on daily activities such as her son asleep on a teddy bear instead of in bed. Another photo in the series shows Amanda's husband in a chair smoking and smiling at the camera white his son lies on the floor screaming next to a kerosene tank. Now I am moving toward something much more personal, my sister, Beth. Beth is the number one stress factor in my life. She has a distorted view of herself that makes life very difficult for those around her. Beth believes she is always right and that goes for family, friends, and even teachers. She believes that she hides this part of her personality from those outside our family, however, as you can see from my thesis Unaware every person that meets her can feel the anger she harbors. Beth is impossible to get close to. As her sister, I should know what is happening in her life but she can't confide in me. Even the simplest of interactions such as "how was your day?" are immediately turned into shouting matches. The fact that I cannot be close to Beth no matter how hard I try makes me feel like a failure as a big sister. This show illustrates my frustration with Beth and my feelings of disconnection. I have photographed Beth in a variety of situations to give her the opportunity to show a different side of herself to me. For example I traveled with her to a band competition in hopes of catching a happy moment or two and this ended with her telling me to leave. I have also incorporated other members of my family and her friends into the series to show that her combativeness is not confined to me. I am really focusing on the emotion that comes forth in these photos in hope of making the viewer feel as I do when interacting with Beth. In this series 1 have not used any staged lighting because I want this to be as truthful as possible. Therefore none of these images have been manipulated. In closing I would like to thank Jacinda Russell for drawing me out of my comfort zone and making me take risks. I would also like to thank Bill Zack for confirming my worst fear, that my show was not up to par at the beginning which served to push me harder. Finally the support of my family and friends could not be more appreciated. Without them I surely would have gone insane, so to you thank you."
