Artist Statement
"This
semester
at
Ball
State
University
I
began
my
Senior
Thesis
in
Painting
titled
, "
Venery.
"
Venery
is
a
word
I
discovered
while
cross-referencing
the
word
venison
.
I
was
researching
ideas
that were
specifically
about
the
painting
that
features
a
grouping
of
deer
that are
waiting
to be
processed
. As
I
read
into the
history
and
etymology
of
venison
,
I
found
it
to be a
perfect
fit
for
my
series
.
One
of the
primary
meanings
for the
word
venery
refers
to the
sport
,
practice
,
art
of
hunting
or the
chase
. This
series
of
paintings
is
questioning
the
moral
dilemmas
that
arise
between
human
relationships
and
animals
.
I
have been
around
animals
my
whole
life
through
hunting
and
farming
.
I
have
encountered
them
both
as
prey
and as
friends
and this has
helped
me
to
understand
and
appreciate
them. The
fight
I
have with
myself
is
that
I
am
an
avid
hunter
and have been
my
whole
life
.
Recently
however
,
I
have been
questioning
why
I
hunt
and
kill
certain
animals
. If
I
have
grown
this
special
admiration
for them how
can
I
still
hunt
them?
Is
it
because
it
is
a
tradition
I
have been
born
into?
Am
I
a
hypocrite
?
Another
thing
I
want
to
address
in these
paintings
is
how
animals
are
treated
. Are they
merely
just
for
food
? Would
you
kill
the
animal
if
you
had to
clean
it
yourself
? These
issues
are
definitely
something
I
want
the
viewer
to
consider
in the
work
.
When
I
began
this
series
of
paintings
I
thought
about
how
I
wanted
to
represent
each
animal
.
I
wanted
my
appreciation
for the
animals
to
show
through
the
way
I
painted
them.
I
chose
these
five
animals
because
they are
iconic
animals
that
humans
consume
.
I
wanted
to
paint
the
animals
in a
state
where
you
questioned
if they are
alive
or not.
Do
they
know
what
is
going
on, and what
is
happening
to them?
I
arranged
each
painting
with
three
variable
components
:
animal
,
color
field
, and
bucket
. The
bucket
is
repeated
in
each
painting
as a
metaphor
for
human
dominance
,
control
, and
death
.
I
chose
the
black
background
to
isolate
each
subject
. The
gestural
color
behind
the
animals
is
a
formal
element
that
both
helps
personalize
and
emphasize
them. The
color
acts
as a
division
and
creates
a
sense
of
overlapping
depth
, but
maintains
a
flattened
symbolic
pictorial
space
. A
few
artists
who
have
inspired
me
throughout
this
semester
are
Robert
McCauley
for his
similar
thoughts
and
ideas
,
Chaim
Soutine
for his
gestural
painterly
techniques
and
color
usage
to
emphasize
the
subject
,
Jenny
Saville
and her
physical
paintings
, and
Francis
Bacon
for his
use
of
dark
,
ambiguous
backgrounds
and his
aggressive
painterly
approach
to
questioning
the
human
condition
.
I
wanted
my
paintings
main
focus
to be on
humanities
relationship
with
animals
and
nature
. In
particular
the
animals
we
breed
,
hunt
, and
consume
for
food
.
I
wanted
to
challenge
the
viewer
to
put
themselves
into the
position
of these
animals
and
question
the
notion
of
our
alleged
superiority
. What
is
a
better
condition
for
humankind
? To
leave
a
mark
or
live
in
harmony
?
I
would
like
to
thank
all
the
faculty
that have
helped
me
through
their
assistance
and
guidance
while
studying
at
Ball
State
University
.
Most
especially
Scott
Anderson
for
helping
me
develop
and
push
my
ideas
and
techniques
. To
Neal
Soley
,
Braydee
Euliss
,
Carly
Wasson
, and
Terry
Flores
for their
ideas
,
advice
, and
support
which
was
greatly
appreciated.
