Artist Statement
Why
did
I
dream
about
them?
Why
was
I
there, and what
did
that
even
mean
?
Humans
are
fascinated
with the
nocturnal
phenomenon
of
dreams
.
Our
subconscious
minds
present
us with an
alternative
world
that
is
as
riddled
in
mystery
as
it
is
awe-inspiring
. The
ambiguous
and
hazy
atmosphere
of a
dream
is
a
quality
often
found
in
my
work
. On a
reoccurring
basis
I
would
hear
the
phrase
"
dream
like
" in
critiques
.
I
began
to
reflect
on what
it
means
for a
piece
to have that
particular
quality
, not
only
in
terms
of
style
, but also in
content
. For
my
thesis
show
, "
Night
Walk
",
I
chose
to
explore
how
dreams
and
drawings
are
similar
. Are
dreams
ever
a
clear
and
whole
story
?
Dreams
are
presented
through
a
broken
narrative
and
provide
us with
open-ended
questions
.
I
feel
that
drawings
can
function
in the
same
way
. These
works
create
a
story
, but there
is
no
set
sequence
of
events
. There are
several
reoccurring
elements
:
masks
,
tigers
,
sky
vs
.
ground
,
coming
vs
.
going
,
up
vs
.
down
,
ladders
, and
televisions
.
Just
as
elements
of a
dream
, the
interpretation
of
each
one
changes
based
on the
individual
viewer's
perspective
.
Instead
of
asking
questions
or
providing
answers
our
subconscious
merely
guides
us
towards
self-reflection
. The
answer
here
isn't
so
much
about
finding
a
correct
one
, but
finding
a
way
to
better
understand
one's
own
mind
. The
answers
our
own
minds
choose
to
fill
the
blanks
with
is
often
much
more
intriguing
and
revealing
than
anything
someone
can
provide
us with. The
nine
mixed
media
drawings
have a
similar
structure
. The
pastel
drawings
also
share
a
few
of the
repeated
elements
. In the
smaller
drawings
each
has a
character
that
seems
to be
passing
through
.
Whether
the
figures
are
coming
or
going
is
ambiguous
.
Depending
on
one's
perspective
the
individual
moments
can
be
read
as
either
someone
arriving
or
someone
leaving
. Then there
is
an
object
,
such
as the
ladder
or the
television
. The
object
is
the
element
that
creates
a
tie
between
this
created
world
and
our
physical
one
.
It
gives
it
that
small
tie
to
reality
. In
each
ink
drawing
there
is
a
place
where
the
character
is
and a
place
they
could
be. The
ladder
can
be
seen
as an
entrance
or
exit
.
It
is
the
way
the
character
can
move
forward
, or how they
arrived
. In
my
mind
I
also
view
the
ladder
as
representing
the
process
of
moving
forward
or
upwards
, a
symbol
of
potential
progress
, or an
ability
to
achieve
success
.
Many
of the
figures
are
wearing
masks
, there are
several
reasons
for this.
First
,
it
distinguishes
them from the
other
figures
.
It
also
takes
away
any
individual
identity
that would
exist
otherwise
. The
masked
figures
function
as
beings
that
seem
harmless
to an
extent
.
However
, the
masks
also have a
darker
and
more
mysterious
quality
.
Even
if these
figures
are not
directly
threatening
, they
do
seem
to
take
on the
role
of an
antagonist
. The
televisions
I
think
mimic
the
moons
.
However
, they also
could
be
viewed
as
another
way
the
character
can
come
into the
frame
or
leave
it
. They also
represent
a
voice
of
influence
. In
our
own
lives
television
is
a
major
outlet
in
which
the
media
and
advertisers
communicate
and
attempt
to
persuade
us.
Finally
there
is
the
tiger
,
who
in
some
works
can
be
seen
as an
additional
character
. Then in
others
he
takes
on the
role
of an
object
. He
is
also
somewhat
of a
guide
through
this
night
walk
. He
can
be
thought
of as
some
sort
of a
companion
, or a
protector
. The
tiger
along
with the
other
reoccurring
elements
were
created
as
I
began
working
to
understand
the
connection
between
drawings
and
dreams
.
Dreaming
is
mysterious
and
fascinating
because
the
interpretation
can
change
so
easily
. "
Night
Walk
" was
created
to
function
in a
similar
way
.
