Artist Statement	This body of work displays several ways to make and use fire. In these works I explored the potential for primitive technology to serve as an art object. The variety of media used represents the artistic potential of my environment. The imagery is derived from ancient art and represents the history of the objects. In making these objects I wanted to demonstrate the usefulness and purpose of fire. Through introspection I have determined that I am a fire enthusiast, but not quite a pyromaniac. My interest in fire is based on its potential uses and the sense of empowerment it gives. I used primitive technologies for these objects to bring to mind great technologies that have been replaced by worse technologies because people are losing touch with the power of nature. I based my imagery on ancient art as another approach to the topic of humanity's connection with nature. I wanted to use materials that could be found in nature, but ended up using materials from my present environment. The wood, metal, and ceramic represent the potential of natural and man-made resources. The processes used on the ceramic and metal required little more than simple tools and fire. I believe that fire is the most simple technology humans could use to survive, if they could only have one technology. Using easily attainable materials I was able to make and use fire in several different ways. The objects I created while doing so resemble artifacts representing the origins of these technologies. I want to thank Kenton Hall, Vance Belt, Ted Neal, and Adam Clute for helping me with my senior project. I would also like to thank the professors that have instructed me during my time at Ball State University.
