Artist Statement	Portland, Indiana is where I first gained understanding of our world. Growing up is filled with locations that define us. That much is certainly true for myself. I live in my childhood and wish to relate that experience to others. The specifics may be lost, but that's unimportant. Certain places, situations and experiences are universal enough to enough to stimulate recollection and that, to me, is worthwhile. These places that make up where we began to understand the structure of our lives and our world are recognizable enough to survive exaggeration and alteration and still be poignant. Everyone has memories of common, public areas like malls and parks and because of this commonality I choose my images based on shared experiences. Locations like public landmarks, movie theaters, stores and civic centers were all considered and eventually chosen from my drawn memories and aesthetic sensibilities. Regardless of how distinct they might be to me, I find they need no description to be engaging. These locations are recognizable and public enough to create a personal link. If I render a popcorn machine at the movies, even if it just happens to be your favorite machine you recall in perfect detail it wilt still stir a reaction from anyone who went to the movies. All it takes is one element to make a connection and you'll find yourself substituting my experience for some of yours. I use sometimes overwhelming detail to my advantage. If the popcorn machine doesn't get you maybe the projector will or, maybe, it might be the aged seats and faulty lighting that brings something to the surface. These are the objects and places that make up our lives, past and present. Juxtaposing them can create a sense of time. When you see a cell phone charging in a room with a landline connection you might assume some relative modernity as well as a long history. Every one of these images is grossly inaccurate to the locations and settings that inspired them. I'm constantly reinventing and in some cases outright introducing elements that were probably never there based on what I think could have been there or what I want to be there. In some cases entire locations are created based purely from my recollection when locations have been lost or dramatically altered. This reinvention of the original location instills both familiarity and a desire to explore the work for its complexity. It's my hope that when viewing my work you find something to laugh at, something to contemplate and something you missed the first, second and third time so that you look again and find something new. You may never know exactly what was going through my head when I put pen to paper and where the ideas come from but that's ultimately not the point. The point is that you've probably been somewhere like these places before. All I'm doing is putting the right information in front of you so that you can remember your places and pay them a visit. Stay as long as you like. I'd like to thank faculty, family and friends for their continued support of this project during the ups and downs. Without them, it would have never happened and I am very grateful. Special considerations should be made to my drawing professor, Heidi Jensen, for her help that included and last minute frame hunt. It was certainly one of the more memorable moments of this semester!
