Artist Statement	The series "Two Chicks at the Same Time" is an exploration of the dichotomy of the predominate roles females are expected to play in society. In my experience as a female, I have found multiple instances where a situation arises and depending on which sex my audience is, my response may be slightly different or altogether contradictory. The four major facets of this dichotomy, in no particular order are the feminist, the object, the traditional (good girl), and the vixen. The first listed, the feminist, embodies the influences in my life that have reinforced the feminist ideal of equality among both sexes, that one sex is not inferior to the other. This facet is most strongly but not solely connected to the second listed, the object. The object refers to the objectified women, the woman who can be either inferior or superior to the male counterpart but exudes excessive female sexuality. If she is inferior, submissive, she tends to be considered the third listed, the traditional, good girl. The good girl is the female role in a patriarchal society. She is has no intention of breaking tradition of her family and societal values and expectations. The dominate, objectified woman is usually considered the fourth listed, the vixen. This woman uses her sexuality as power over her male counterparts, usually for personal gain. I would also consider this facet to be the most interesting and most complex facet because the vixen pulls traits from both the feminist and the objectified woman, which are usually complete opposites. This is also where all my questions about femininity tend to be. Is it ok to be sexy? Do I need to be sexy? Is it ok to be dominate? Should I consider traditions more? These are only a few of the questions that arise when thinking about women's roles in today's society. These paintings are set up in what is known as a diptych format, meaning two paintings side by side, which are meant to be viewed together to better state a meaning or concept. I have chosen this format because of the push-pull I feel when discussing female sexuality and roles in society. There are usually always two sides. I have also chosen to display them angled inward toward each other instead of flat on the wall. This helps in two ways to strengthen my concepts. By angling them it is no longer possible to see all paintings at the same time, straight on. This reflects my views of not being able to truly embody all facets of female roles at the same time. Secondly, with the space that is created by the angle, I am inviting my viewer in for a better view. The viewer must, however, "choose" a side and turn their back to the other to fully view each painting properly. This also mirrors my views on two sides to female roles and not being able to truly play both. I have also chosen to display these paintings off the wall, on risers on the floor. These paintings become more tangible as sculpture, installation type artwork, instead of static and non interactive on the wall. It is important that my viewer be able to move through the piece. The risers my paintings are on and the title of my show itself plays into my personal sense of humor and wit. The risers that are tasted in plaster are spherical, which I have drawn from furniture design, club feet. I have however chosen to paint them gold which plays into the masculine "brass balls" sexual pun. It is important to maintain the balance between seriousness and light heartedness in my work. I take my work seriously and I believe this body of work "Two chicks at the Same Time" has a very serious subject matter that is very relevant in today's society, but I am not afraid to poke a little fun. I would like to thank all the professors, fellow peers, friends and family who have helped me, no only on this senior thesis exhibition but throughout my collegiate career. I would like to thank Scott Anderson, the head professor in my senior thesis exhibition. Thank you for always being available to ask questions and working with my creative process to solve the problems that arose in my paintings. I would also like to thank you for bring the visiting artist lain Machell to Ball State. He had a lot of great advice and wisdom to share as well. A huge part to this show's success was in the display. I must thank both Kenton Hall and John Reishus for all of their help in casting the large plaster spheres. Without their knowledge this display would not have happened. I need to thank all of my friends and family who were always willing to sit and talk about my concepts or understanding when I was not able to come visit as often as they may like. Your support has been truly priceless.
