Artist Statement	Years before I was born and when my parents were still young, a stream of tornados destroyed over half our town. Among the destruction was my great-grandparents' entire collection of photos: their life during the Great Depression, their marriage, and family holidays. To make the tragedy worse very few copies of these photos existed beyond the town's borders, and only a handful of photos have been retrieved from family in other states. I have accepted this loss and as a response turned to saving and archiving other's photos, and home movies created in and around the 1920s through 1950s. I archive and preserve the memory of each film reel as if the family were my own. By scanning and enlarging the individual frames, information and details captured within each frame is realized perhaps for the first time: degradation over its eighty-year life; scratches from being mishandled; details in the environment too small to appreciate at 24 frames per second. My audience assesses the once moving memories as large, still images. Because these images serve as a replacement I asked a few of my family members to think of them as replacements as well. I requested they imagine these images as their own and to think of a memory that would be associated with the set of images. In addition to these images serving as a replacement for my own loss, their purpose is to aid in the study of early documentary film and American history recorded through these mediums. My interest in working with amateur film blossomed from history of film classes. I immediately became intrigued by the uses of film, not only for the purpose of entertainment, but its progression into art and its political influences through propaganda. I studied the effects film had on the world and wanted to explore what, if any, influence this medium had on individuals who could afford the equipment. I'm also interested in the impact their lives have on us today.
