Artist Statement	This body of work explores vessels containing negative spaces. I first began making these forms for a class assignment a few years ago. I was encouraged to use molds to make a form that would showcase the mold making process. This was where the idea first began. Technically, building a vessel around a negative space is difficult. Many larger vessels are commonly made by coil building or throwing on the wheel. For these objects, neither process was conducive to creating the negative spaces that I had envisioned. Building a vessel with the assistance of a mold provided the ideal process to create the forms I desired. This process also allowed me to build more quickly on a larger scale. This format produced larger surfaces which were ideal for showcasing the qualities produced by the atmospheric soda firing. The soda firing process takes place in a natural gas fueled kiln. During the firing, a solution of soda ash and water is sprayed into the kiln. The solution is vaporized and moved by the flames moving through the kiln. The vapor combines with the glazes and slips on the surface of the objects, and creates unique flame-painted qualities. Many ceramic vessels tend to be utilitarian; they are designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive. My intent with this body of work is to approach the line where vessel meets sculpture. The voids have a significant effect on the practicality of the vessels. However, I believe the negative space provides a desirable visual quality. There is a certain tension and energy to this space created within each vessel. This negative space is an ever-changing aspect to each piece, always framing the space it resides. I would like to thank Vance Bell for introducing me to the mold making process I used to create these vessels. His promptings and guidance allowed me to first develop my idea, and work through the technicalities of the process. I would also like to thank Ted Neal for guiding through my thesis work, and helping me to more fully develop my ideas. A huge thanks to my family and friends for their never ending support.
