Artist Statement	The search for life on other planets has been a goal of mankind since the first spacecraft orbited the Earth and began the space race in the late 1950's. This search continued on well past the end of the Cold War and is now focused on finding water on other planets. With the newest discoveries of planets outside of our solar system, known as exo-planets, this search has become even more difficult. My work focuses on the discovery of one of these exo-planets and mankind's attempts to reach this new planet. This journey is more about the technological leaps that it will take to get there than being about the planet itself. I have imagined the time line between images as being measured not in years or decades but in generations. The use of charcoal in my drawings represents carbon as one of the basic elements of the universe. This connection, along with the deep blacks achieved with charcoal seemed perfect to use in drawings of outer space. The painting also shares this connection with a charcoal under-drawing. The use of texture, real and rendered, is used to create visual tension and contrast to the large black areas in the drawings. I would like to thank my mentor, Heidi Jensen along with Hannah Barnes, Scott Anderson and David Hannon for their invaluable assistance in putting the show together. A special thanks to Josh McGarvey for helping me imprint my postcards and to Tony Botkin for photographing my portfolio. I would also like to thank the members of the Muncie Astronomy Club for their continued support and inspiration.
