Artist Statement	I always loved jewelry, even when I was a child. I do not know if it was the shiny surfaces or the textured designs in metal that appealed to me but I was captivated. As an adult I found anything to do with art was my passion for getting up in the mornings. With that passion I became an art teacher. Art and teaching are not just jobs, but ways of life. As a lifelong learner I decided to get my masters degree in metals, to be surrounded by the glow and the textures of metal. I wanted to learn more about metal, especially silver, and how to make it assume the forms I designed. After studying symbolic rings, I found out many of their purposes throughout time, and this enabled me to reflect on how I should design my own rings. I used the eye as a symbol to represent God watching over and protecting the individual. Another symbol I frequently use is the small ball shape, which represents relationships in life now, and in the future. The several thick lines within the designs represent paths that can be taken. Some lines have a fork, and these represent major choices in life. My rings are like miniature sculpture pieces to be explored and interpreted. It was now clear to me that my show's theme would be called, "With This Ring...I Embrace, Endow, Identify, Proclaim, Marry, Request, Pledge, Remember, Entrust, and Believe." This study has provided me with a gift that I am eager to share with those around me. I can create symbolic rings for each one of my children, with each ring having its own special meaning. These rings and their unique stones can be passed on from generation to generation. I cannot think of a better way to pass on a little bit of me and keep my spirit alive. It is for these reasons that I want to continue this endeavor. I feel blessed to have completed this study and expect to continue creating for the rest of my life. I especially want to thank my professors. Pat Nelson, who has guided me in metals and is one of the best educators that I have encountered in my 51 years as a learner, Dr. Natalie Phillips has been a great inspiration to my body of work as she has brought her expertise in the area of Art History. Kenton Hall has always been and encourager to me to stay the course with smiling a face. I also want to thank my family, for being so understanding of the long hours that I spent away from them while working on this project.
