Artist Statement	In the late 19th/early 20th century, post-mortem photography was a common occurrence. Death of the young was just as common as the death of those who were older, and photography of the dead was considered part of the grieving process for those who survived. My portraits are my own way of coping with the inevitability of death. My series, "Pre-Mortem", consists of portraits of my family members and loved ones in their personal environments. These photographs are a way for me to address my fear of losing them. One of my goals is to document the person themself; to have a record of their existence. One way I'm accomplishing this is by not having my subjects engaged in any activities, nor are they giving any kind of extreme expression, like elation or anger. I want them to just be. The environments become important to the documentation of these family members as well. Many of the spaces act as a eulogy for the people inhabiting them, and tell things about the subject that we wouldn't know otherwise. The spaces, like their inhabitants, are ephemeral. They won't last forever, and some of these dwellings may not even be occupied by the time this series is experienced. By capturing these individuals in this moment, I'm giving them somewhere they never have to change, and giving myself something to hold on to even after they're gone. Death is unavoidable, and by spending this time with them and taking their portraits, I'm preserving these moments of them forever. My fears and anxieties about death and loss drive me to grieve over my loved ones before they're even gone. I'm using these "pre-mortem" photographs as part of my personal mourning process. I want to thank my family for taking the time to be a part of this series; the time we got to spend together was precious to me, and a lot of fun. Thanks to Nolan for being someone I can always count on, and for putting up with a tree-hugging hippie and her dogs. 1 love you. Thanks to Jacinda Russell and Mark Sawrie for being such supportive mentors throughout my time here at Ball State, and for helping me develop my ideas to create art. I also want to thank Jennifer and Nate for always being there to bounce ideas off of and laugh with. I'll miss you both so much.
