Artist Statement	These works collectively address issues dealing with the way that humans interact with nature and its resources. It is influenced by extensive travel through forests and down highways and across oceans. The woodcuts address specific instances of environmental devastation mostly occurring in the Calumet Region of Indiana where I grew up. This region is one of incredible natural beauty and diversity that has been almost completely destroyed by man. I have recently begun to use the book format for its history as a method of transferring information and its natural ability to depict landscape. My particular way of working is influenced by naive art. In working in this style, I am making reference to folk art and to artists like Picasso, Miro and Dubuffet. The heavy texturing on my work is heavily indebted to the Lamasu and throne room of Sargon II and the Egyption hieroglyphs that I have visited many times at the Oriental Institute in Chicago. I am interested in working in this manner as a simple, effective and efficient method of communication and as a way to connect with primitive instinct and nature. have recently begun to create large collages using garbage that comes from my daily life and that I find walking around Muncie as the primary material. I have painted the collages black as a way to transform and unify the objects thus highlighting the form over the content of the individual object. This project is important to me as a way to decrease my own eco-footprint as well as a way to change people's perceptions of trash by highlighting the beauty of its form. I see the individual components of this piece as modular units that can be changed around and placed in multiple compositions. This project is at its beginning stages and will continue to evolve. This work is a comment on the art of Duchamp, the late modernist color field painters, minimalism and Jeff Koons. I am interested in this project as autobiography, social critique, value transformation, self- evaluation and self- improvement. I make drawings a part of my process of developing a piece of art. Many of these drawings are based in automatic drawing and free association. The etchings in this show were developed through these means and represent the experimentation process involved in creating a larger piece. My work draws inspiration from my deep interest in the history of art. My list of historical art influences includes but is by no means limited to Mesopotamian Art, Egyptian art, Etruscan Art, Medieval Art, Renaissance Art, Romanticism, Realism, Japanese Woodcuts, American folk art, Modern and post-modern, Chicago Imagists.
