Artist Statement	My way of expressing the Layers of Life is through visual narrative. Working with self-portraits and a daily journal has allowed me to reveal deep and personal layers of emotions and to record physical as well as psychological changes. For my senior project, I intended to capture this sort of change through a kind of simplicity and openness that could touch the viewer's sense of self-awareness and the universal desire for the renewal of spirit, and the possibilities of change. In the recent past, I have experienced overwhelming situations in my life that have made me feel impure. As a result, I wanted to rid myself of these oppressive experiences; so I decided to cut my dreadlocks. In traditional Jamaican culture, dreadlocks are believed to be so sacred that they are never to be cut. However, there are those who cut them as a way of ridding negative energy that has been carried through the hair. Over a three month period of time, for every small layer of my hair I cut, I recorded each change with photography and journal writing and I saved the hair. Being of Jamaican descent, my mother had always instilled in me that hair is of a spiritual nature, so each time I cut my hair I felt as though I was both exposing and releasing the tensions while capturing the positive moments of life that had woven and grown into those dreadlocks. Now removed from my head, new growth will take place. Like a calendar symbolizes a passage of time, I have arranged seventy images and the corresponding journal text on a two week grid. As further evidence of time passing and my physical change, the dreadlocks are enclosed in a metal box. All of these self-portraits, journal entries, and hair remnants have become a symbol for the layers of my life that represent the process of purification and a renewal of my spirit. My expressions vary from playfulness to deFiance, sadness, confusion and confidence; presenting such a close-up revelation of the intimacy between the subject and the viewer that one cannot help but feel a sense of closeness in his or her own relationship to the subject. I want to give a special thanks to my mentor Jacinda Russell, Mark Sawrie, Maura Jasper, and Nicole Cardassilaris for helping me with my senior thesis and throughout my years of being in the art department. I especially appreciate the information and advice you have shared with me. All of your help has been invaluable to me during this process. I also want to thank my family and friends who have supported me throughout the years of pursuing my career as an artist.
