Artist Statement	Two years ago my mother passed taking her history and stories with her. She left behind pictures and keepsakes that provide only riddles for me to reflect on. These personal relics reveal the life story she lived. They hold answers to questions about her I am no longer able to ask. It has made me realize that the most influential woman in my life, my mother, was a person that now I feel I barely knew. The loss of my mother has allowed me to think in more universal way. Every day people die taking a piece of history with them. Objects people leave behind will never tell the true story they hold; each story dies with those who treasured the object. This is where my inspiration for my senior project begins. I found several picture albums containing memories from my mother's childhood and family moments she never talked about. The photographs include people she may have treasured while living that I will never meet or know. I tried to make a connection with these people by studying their faces. The people in the photographs inevitably intrigued me. So, I started to draw them. I created a body of drawings around the images and lost memories. I executed these drawings on prepared paper that I created to have an aged antique appearance by painting the paper with multiple layers of gesso and then applying soil, loose pigments, and coffee stains. When I created a suitable surface I drew back in with graphite and mixed medias to create the imagery. All of the drawings have a band that stretches across the bottom of the composition and links the drawings by showing elements from the series. There are also other symbolic forms within the composition that help create a loose narrative. This narrative helps conveys my reflection on the loss and recovery experience. I would like to thank those who contributed time and thoughts to my work; my professor, senior project mentor, and true friend Scott Anderson; my family whom I am able to speak my strange and bizarre thoughts about my mother to; my colleges, friends, and roommates who supported my creativity; and my mother, for everything.
