The more I work, the more I realize that for me, making things is more than a hobby, or something to do, or a way to make money. It is compulsion, therapy, work, play, and research. These roles and more are all served during the activity of making; the results (in this case, paintings) serve as little more than evidence of this activity. In this series, I'm focusing specifically on art's role as a method of catharsis. Buried in each painting is evidence of a thought, memory, motivation, or idea that used to be important to me. All of these things were somehow, willingly or unwillingly, left behind. This activity (of leaving things behind) isn't always permanent, obvious, intentional, or even negative. In fact, many of the memories I have buried are the result or cause of personal growth. Some are maybe not as far behind me as I would like, and the paintings are my attempts to purge them. At the same time, the paintings remain as evidence of interment (as artworks are evidence of the activity of making art). In this way, they can be seen as tributes to the things contained within. My goal is not to forget; but rather to let go and to NOT forget. I'd like to thank my Mom and Dad, who have been as supportive as humanly possible throughout this process. I'd also like to extend my gratitude to my friend and mentor Hannah Barnes, my co-conspirator Jacinda Russell, to Scott Anderson for his patience, and to my friends for their support. Thanks also to sunshine and warm weather, for my sanity. |
