Artist Statement	For the past 12 years I've lived with epilepsy. A year and a half ago, I was lucky enough to have a corrective brain surgery. After having surgery I found my life completely turned upside down. Traveling through a world of new experiences, and independences, my creative expression drastically changed, and soon took over. As an artist, I felt the best way to show this was through 3 dimensional sculptural wall hangings. The scale of this work was set very large to represent the impact that this disability has had upon my life. The glaze & under glaze color scheme were specifically chosen to describe the character and symbolism of each piece. While building at such a large scale, I encountered many barriers. For example, each of my pieces had to be built and dried on foam sheets for weeks to prevent cracking and warping before going through the first firing, "bisque firing', when the clay body has no water left inside. During the bisque firing the pieces had to be fired at a slower rate to prevent further warping and cracking. If the piece survived the bisque firing it went to the second firing, "glaze firing" bringing the kiln to temperature to melt the glaze to the ceramic piece. If these pieces made it past the glaze firing without warping, cracking, or splitting, they made it to the wall. My show was purposefully designed to show an expression of what an epileptic goes through during their life. It is meant to be an informative show, while also showing how I am overcoming my past. As a result of this, I've learned that it is ok to be open about your disability. It was by doing this show that 1 met many other people experiencing the same thing I was. And it is in their honor that I dedicate this show to them. I would like to thank my faculty advisors Ted Neal and Vance Bell for all the hours they put in, making sure my pieces would hang. I've learned so much from you, and was honored to be your student. To my parents, who watched me experience those rough years, but are here overcoming with me. To Sarah, Kim, Siddhant, and Barrett, you have never stopped giving me your love and support.
