Artist Statement	Problems never just go away by themselves, and if you bury or ignore them, they fester and grow, only becoming more complicated and challenging than the original issue itself. These works relate to personal issues and anxiety problems that I have had to overcome in the last year. Relationships, identity, gender and self-reliance are all strong themes that resonate within the series. I use string as a visual allegory to describe the apprehension I feel when I have to address these issues in my everyday life. The domestic environment acts as a window into my psyche, and the string is an intruder, the unwelcome. But the more I try to untangle the knot, the bigger the problems get. Working exclusively in the darkroom, forgoing any digital tools, I feel much more emotionally involved in the process, and that my hand as an artist is much more evident in the prints. Painting on the developer creates a much more atmospheric quality that enhances the emotional element within the photographs. I would like to thank my mentor, Jacinda Russell. for her continued support and love of shenanigans. I would also like to thank my parents for all their love and acceptance, caffeine, my fellow photography students, friends, and family. Most of all I would like to thank the developer, stop bath and fixer for having such wonderful chemistry with me! Without any of you, none of this would be possible, and my sanity would be long gone.
