Artist Statement	Since the age of four, I've always been fascinated by animals, whether it was reading books about or actually capturing by hand what I like to call "pets". I have always felt a deep connection to the earth and its creatures. This body of work is based around that fascination, more specifically the Web of Life, in which all living and non-living plants animals, and humans are interconnected. In Chief Seattle's 1854 speech to President Franklin Pierce's representative concerning the purchase of tribal lands he profoundly identifies this idea; "We are part of the earth and it is part of us. Man did not weave the web of life. He is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web he does to himself." This series of five panels, titled Amalgamates demonstrates a personal vocabulary derived from contemporary artists, Native American totemic art, and Asian landscape painting. These symbols or hybrids in my drawings correspond to ideas that I believe lead a person to a fulfilling life. In my drawings, each specific image has a proven symbolic meaning, i.e., the olive tree represents longevity, while the hare represents female ideology and the ram represents mate ideologies. The viewer can also create their own meanings based on their own interpretations about the relationships between these symbols. The compositions feature a type of psychological balance or imbalance due to the tack of a clear perspective or specific location. I have introduced a more obscure non-representational landscape which also creates possibilities concerning the significance of the elements. By placing floating balloon-shaped less symbolic format elements in the foreground and background the viewers eye is engaged to explore the drawings. The vivid color is of great importance to convey opposition, and attract the viewer. I chose a series of color compliments (variations of oranges and blues) to generate intensity and conflict. Applying multiple transparent layers of watercolor, acrylics, watercolor pencil, and china marker heightened the mood and setting. Artists who inspired me for this series include Kate Street, Native American painter Jaune-Quick-to-see Smith, Mark Ryden, as welt as surrealism, Asian landscape painting, and Native American Totems. I was also heavily inspired by Native American spirituality and the idea that all humans, plants and animals living and non-living are amalgamative or interconnected. I would like to thank Ball State University for the education I have received. I would also like to thank my family for their constant support and love. Additionally, I would like to thank the Ball State Department of Art faculty, most importantly Scott Anderson for encouraging me to persevere with the arts.
