Artist Statement	Throughout history, salt has been incredibly precious to humankind. Because of this, salt has many symbolic connotations attached to it. It is a natural resource vital to the lives of all people. The selection of the medium is integral to the artwork. Each landscape is made of salt and food coloring, adding a unique twist to the saying, "Salt of the Earth." Salt is often seen as a symbol of purity. This symbol is also reflected in the portrayal of the landscapes themselves, which are idealistic, evoking a sense of escapism, a release from the bland everyday world of reality into the perfect world of fantasy. This also adds significance to the medium, which is often used to spice up tasteless food. The use of the salt is very impressionistic in its handling, harkening back to the traditional art of landscape painting. Indeed, the method of pointillism is immediately brought to mind when looking at these photographs. As is the nature of pointillism, the viewer has to step back from the photo in order to see the whole picture clearly. This gives the viewer control as to what comes into focus, either the overall picture or the details. Looking at the work more closely and realizing it is made from a unique and unexpected material, the viewer forgets about the subject and is forced to think about the physical act of creating each mini-installation. The viewer thinks about the process, which is not revealed in the photographs. After a landscape is constructed and photographed, it is then swept away, leaving only the photograph as evidence of its original existence. The act of discarding each landscape emphasizes the ephemeral qualities of the medium as well as life itself. I would like to thank everyone who supported me in the making of this project, my friends, family and everyone in the photography department, especially my mentor, Jacinda Russell.
