Artist Statement	I grew up in the mid-western town of Gas City, Indiana, went to high school there, and is still my home today. College came late for me at the age of 35. My undergraduate studies were spent at Indiana Wesleyan University, 5 minutes from my home. I worked in the family business for twenty years as a barber. When I finally decided to become an art teacher I knew it would be a tough and lengthy process. Now that I've taught for 12 years, I couldn't imagine what I would be doing otherwise. I love studying about art and artists as much as I enjoy sharing it with others. My mother died of cancer in 2003. Since then I lost a large number of friends and family to the disease. As I compiled a list of people I new who died of cancer, including celebrities, it seemed endless. This subject, I thought, had to be addressed in painting. How to address this problem was to become a tough decision because I wanted to show the dark side of this disease that people often hide. My intention is not to offend family members whom have lost a loved one but to illustrate the courageous battle they fought. From my own experience, observing and waiting while my mom hung on to every minute of life, I felt the need to draw attention to battling cancer. This group of paintings may seem somewhat grotesque, but as an artist, I have never felt I painted anything so real up to this point. Never have I trusted my artistic instincts as much to create a body of work. This is a collection of people that influenced me as an artist and who happened to die of cancer.
