Artist Statement	This body of work for my Master's in Painting explores ideas about the unique qualities of an artist's hand (personal gesture) and is a study about mark making. Is an individual's mark truly unique? Can it be recreated? In order to attempt to answer these questions, I chose to take an experimental approach. I began the experiment by creating three compositions that consisted of line drawings. These compositions were created through automatic drawing. When a combination of marks created an interpretable form, I created a space around them in order to allow them a space to exist. This developed an emphasis on composition throughout the body of work. When the drawings were complete, I sought out three groups of people. Each group consists of nineteen individuals. The groups are: people who consider themselves non-artistic, beginning level art students or artists with no formal training, and advanced level art students. With the groups determined, I began a game of Telephone using drawings instead of language. Each group was assigned to work from one of my drawings. The first person from each group was asked to recreate the respective drawing, picking up their pencil only to create another line. After they interpreted my original drawing, their interpretation was passed on to the next individual in their respective group. This process continued until each group consisted of twenty interpreted drawings. Using my original drawing and the final interpretation of the same drawing, I created paintings dealing with formal properties. Line, composition, and color played significant roles when creating this body of work. These paintings are interpretations of the drawings from each group. Some drawings were more difficult to interpret than others. By interpreting the final drawings, I was able to gain insight into my own mark making. It is hard to determine which group was the most successful. Many elements appear and disappeared throughout the process. In the end, it was the final interpretation that determined the outcome. My influences are the Abstract Expressionists, Frank Nitsche, Brice Marden, Takashi Murakami, and many others. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this experiment.
