Artist Statement	subvert: (suh b-vert) v. 1. to overthrow (something established or existing). 2. to cause the downfall, ruin, or destruction of. 3. to undermine the principles of: corrupt. Art consists of a cycle of never-ending, succeeding revolutions. It becomes a boring game when one realizes that it's just the same two people taking turns bonking each other on the head over and over again. "we fight. and fight. and fight and fight and fight..." Nevertheless, it is necessary to gain a breath of fresh air every now and then. Out with the old and in with the new. Everybody gets their turn sooner or later. It's my turn now. The genesis of my idea is the subversion of popular culture images. What? It's already been done? (dude, revolutions are circular.) Marcel Duchamp subverted the whole idea of fine art by exhibiting a toilet bowl. Andy Warhol did the same with advertising images. Both of these men were injecting a little humor and fun into a very stuffy atmosphere. And in my opinion, they contributed vision and poetry too. After all, it was the literary intrusion of content and metaphor into the visual sphere of pure form that Clement Greenberg. the formalist critic, was so horrified of. Let's horrify some people. But revolutions are circular, and both Warhol and Duchamp limited their poetry by disallowing the imagination of Romanticism to sully their very pure "fuck you's". So here I am, the hopeless romantic, incorrigibly honest, born of Star Wars-esque flights of fancy and eighties pop-music, like tinkerbell sneaking in to the room (or gallery) while everyone is sleeping and touching with my magic wand those staid static dead-pan representations of culture and wit, sparkling to make them come alive! Yes, I am a hopeless romantic. But I'm not the only one. There was Carravagio, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Goya, all of whom influence this cycle of paintings as much (if not more) than our favorite pair of dubious dandies, Warhol and Duchamp. Yes, I love Postmodernism, don't you? Don't know what it is? Both Star Wars and Madonna have been called post-modern, but so have David Salle, Mark Tansy, etc., etc. I don't know... it was news to me when I found that the world was a fractured, paranoiac mess of differance and redirected gazes.--OR WAS IT??? "WE CREATED IT, LET'S TAKE IT OVER", was a rallying cry of Patti Smith in the 70's, the heyday of post-modernism, (how dated can you get?). but it seems to apply just as well today—the world revolves in a circle, not up and down. So in a nutshell, this is my taking of Post-modernism out of the hands of disenchanted hippies and putting it where it belongs—in the hands of those who as children wept shamelessly at multiple showings of "E.T." Oh E.T., phone home!... if only you knew that in an age of subjective isolation and impossible communication your message would go unheard!...but wait, it was not unheard....like Peter Pan I implore ail of the children to chant "I believe".... to make poor Tinkerbell (me) come back alive!!!! So, in the same vein as the coda at the beginning of Wizard of Oz, I implore the viewers of my exhibition to reawaken that childlike purity of heart that is what makes art come alive and mean something! Drop the zero and get with the hero!
