Artist Statement	Through this series of portraits I am discovering the intricate and varied manners of expression that my closest companion and I assert ourselves through. I began this semester looking to investigate a considerably larger array of models but found little inspiration. With every photographic exercise I found myself pulled into exploring the profound connection I experience with my mother. This exploration into the intensity and scope of our bond has proven to be as problematic as it has been rewarding. I began my expedition by looking for evidence of our connection in shared and parallel facial expressions. I now find myself traveling into unpredictable waters. I am amazed at the ease with which I can read my mothers face and her mine. A glance, slight change in posture or hand gesture can tell each of us what the other is thinking or feeling. Our intense fluency in this language seems strange to others who are unable to grasp the way we communicate with each other. I am embarking on a journey into the heart and souls of my mother and myself. This crazy wonderful relationship is the spring of everything meaningful, dynamic, unpredictable and validating in my life. I want, 1 need to profess this truth the only way I know how, through my camera. Trying to capture faithfully this friendship is consuming. Expression, 1 am finding. permeates everything we do. Speech, gestures and body language are all expressive avenues. With this series I am not trying to explain my connection with my mother but rather share it. I chose to present my images as black and white and tightly cropped to funnel the focus of the viewer on the captured individual. The images are grouped together systematically in a grid. One grid corresponds to my mother, one to me and one to our complicated partnership. The sensation of a grid is further suggested by the block masonry found in the background. I chose this format to communicate the unique person as an individual and then the mixture of our two souls into one. I would like to express my gratitude for the valuable and encouraging support and advice I received from Jacinda Russell. I would also like to recognize the past several years of guidance and assistance given to me by Mark Sawrie and Serena Nancarrow. To my gorgeous inspiration and best friend, thank you for being you! You are truly my earthly angel and God has blessed me with you.
